June 2022 Learning Collaborative Newsletter

Greetings CCLC Members,
We hope your summer is off to a great start!
Things have been busy at Cradle Cincinnati: Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith was announced as the new Executive Director; we are preparing for the release of the 2021 annual report; and we are getting ready to kick off our next five-year strategic planning process! We are also excited to welcome a new team member to the Learning Collaborative team, Grace Miller! See the "Story of Us" section to learn more about Grace.
Stay tuned for opportunities to engage in the strategic planning process over the next few months. We look forward to celebrating our community's successes from the past five years and envisioning what maternal and infant health could look like in Hamilton County in five years.

Checking the Numbers
We start each publication with currently available data related to infant mortality in Hamilton County to remind us of our shared purpose—to reduce the number of infant deaths; to reduce the infant mortality rate; and to eliminate infant mortality racial disparities. Every action item or resource that is included in our communication is meant to help us reach our goals.

For comparison: The average number of infant deaths for January-April from 2017-2021 is 30.
The infant mortality rate is the number of infant deaths divided by the number of live births over a specified time-period. Below is the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births for May 2021-April 2022 in Hamilton County.

Note: In adhering to data sharing guidelines from the state of Ohio regarding data sharing, the number of infant deaths for other non-Hispanic races and Hispanic of any race are too small to report on a quarterly basis. This information is included in the annual report.

Our Key Drivers
The CCLC aims to support the mission of Cradle Cincinnati in eliminating infant mortality in Hamilton County by focusing on the following drivers.

What You and Your Team Can Do:
Join the New CCLC Online Community
Did you know that the Cradle Cincinnati Learning Collaborative has a new online community specifically for health care professionals? This new platform is a one stop shop for all things related to infant mortality prevention. The primary goal is to use this platform as a way for us to stay connected between CCLC meetings and events – a space that fosters collaboration on new ideas and allows for us to share challenges and best practices. But the platform also offers so much more, including:
A calendar of upcoming community events
A resource center with articles, tools, handouts, social media posts and more
 Ability to host webinars
 Ability to create working groups
Order form for requesting educational materials
To join the community, visit the website and select “Join Us” in the upper righthand corner. Complete the short form and submit your request to join. We will review the request and grant access to the platform.

Available Resource: CCLC Resource Center
Once you login to the CCLC online community, you will have access to the Resource Center. There, you can find educational materials for patients/clients and tools for health care providers on safe sleep, maternal smoking cessation, birth spacing, equity and more. We also plan to include social media tools for different awareness months that your organization can easily use. And if you are looking for flyers about Cradle Cincinnati programs or events, those are there too!

Story of Us: Grace Miller
As part of each communication, we will have a section dedicated to highlighting a CCLC member. Each member will share their story of self – the moments that led them to where they are today and why they chose to do this work. These collective stories represent the story of us, the CCLC.

“My interest in women’s reproductive and sexual health began during my high school health class. This initial interest is what prompted me to study public health at Miami University for my undergrad degree. While I was finishing my last year, I also received my CHES certification, which furthered my interest in educating others about health. After graduating, I worked with inner city youth and then began working at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. While at CCHMC, I completed my masters degree at NKU. This allowed me to return to the foundation of what I wanted in a career, which led me to the Cradle Cincinnati Learning Collaborative.
I am excited to learn and work with such a diverse group to reduce infant mortality!”
